What makes an athlete special? Who wins and who does not? To be truly elite, complete commitment is necessary. Because of determination, they win. Elite athletes are never satisfied. They never give their best performance. They sacrifice anything for the win. The same can be said about saints. They are willing to enter the narrow gate as in the gospel. They are constantly looking to please Jesus. The absolute commitment causes doing whatever God asks. There is no sacrifice too great. They never refuse what God asks. They deny themselves pleasures. They are never satisfied. As soon as they helped, they go to the next challenge. They are humble servants. Athletes are motivated by pride. Saints are motivated by love. Saints compete for the glory of God just to enter heaven. The path to heaven is an uphill climb, effort and commitment is needed. None of us walk the path alone. Saints walk with us. Jesus walks ahead of us. The good shepherd never abandons us. The sufferings of this life strength us. Long after retirement, trophies are reminders. We persevere and suffering will all make sense, crossing the finish line together.
